Howard Pearce was born in Melbourne in 1941, later entering Swinburne Art School and graduating in 1960 with a Diploma in Illustration. After initially obtaining employment with Fanfare Films, a subsidiary of television station GTV Channel Nine, he worked for many years as a freelance animation film-maker. His early interest in the photo-recording and measured drawing of old buildings in the Australian outback coincided with a growth in general awareness of natural and cultural heritage values that led to the concept of a 'national estate' and the enactment of new environmental legislation by the commonwealth and the states. In 1979 he began post-graduate studies at Melbourne University. His reputation as a heritage planner led to various consultancies in far north South Australia and the Northern Territory, and eventually appointments to cultural heritage positions with the Territory and Queensland governments. This is the story of the heritage of central and northern Australia, told through the river systems and land forms of the outback. The book is about 'place', combining historical research, photography and architectural recording, with heritage conservation. Volume 1 covers Lake Eyre, the Centre, and the Top End. Volume 2 includes the Channel Country, Carpentaria, and Cape York. A third volume contains a folio of measured architectural and archaeological drawings of significant outback heritage places. The purpose of the book is to make the research information it contains, as widely available as possible. Before roads and highways, the rivers of central and northern Australia were the life blood of the outback. As dreaming tracks and trade routes they provided food and water, stories, goods, direction and survival. The major watercourses had long served as traditional routes and were central to Aboriginal livelihood, lifestyle and beliefs. The rivers were the routes chosen for white settlement of the outback. The places described have been grouped within their respective land and river systems to highlight common geological and historical values, and provide comparisons in building design, structural features, and similar patterns in the use of natural and manufactured building materials. During the 1970s the author developed a simple method for producing accurate measured architectural drawings for recording outback heritage places. His technique avoided the expensive, time-consuming practices then used for industrial photogrammetry. The drawings were hand-recorded before the availability of computer-aided design and drafting software. The finished pencil drafts were stored away for many years before being rediscovered and completed by the author. Images of the many journeys from the 1970s to the present contribute to the scope of the work. Hopefully it will add to an appreciation of the skill and diversity in early outback structures, many of which were never intended to last more than a handful of good seasons or a few profitable years. As age takes effect and local knowledge, resources and skills disappear, places such as these will never be seen again.
